Solar cooking pilot starts in the small community of Tamoung Pha-em. This is where we rebuilt a primary school in 2009 with Global Roots volunteers.  The area was surrounded by jungle, but now every piece of land is turned into a palm oil field. no more wood for cooking. Families start to rely on kerosene, or walk long distances to get wood.

Tamoung Pha-em, May 28th, 2010  - Solar cooker pilot project starts!

This is the first Global Roots pilot project for Solar Cookers. In collaboration with Solar Cookers International in Nairobi, we will deploy cookers in Kenya in July 2010.

The small community of Tamoung Pha-em is the perfect place for this pilot. This is where we rebuilt a primary school in 2009 with Global Roots volunteers. This is the local place to start this project as the community relies heavily on wood for cooking. The area was surrounded by jungle, but now every piece of land is turned into a palm oil field. no more wood for cooking. Families start to rely on kerosene, or walk long distances to get wood.

The "Cookit" i bought from US and carried all the way to Cambodia worked perfectly. In a few hours, this family could sample for the first time food cooked with sunlight: rice and fish!

We left the cooker and will monitor usage. The goal is to have Dany Pan, our school teacher, use the cooker regularly and adapt local food recipes. Upon assessment, we will decide if this solution can be deployed to all families.

Stay tuned for more on this and our upcoming projects!
