Sustainable Nutrition and Vocational Education

Mtito Andei, Kenya

In 2011, Global Roots and our community partners in Mtito Andei, Kenya, worked to expand a multi-faceted initiative aimed at improving children's well-being through sustainable nutrition, vocational education, and trauma support.

A key milestone was the introduction of on-site gardens with state-of-the-art greenhouses at local institutions, including the Baraka Orphanage, Matangini, and Matulani schools. With the support of generous donors, we successfully set up the first of three greenhouses at the Baraka Orphanage, with local oversight provided by Global Roots' liaison, James Odaba.

In addition to providing nutritious food, we focused on supporting children living with HIV/AIDS by developing a nutrition program in collaboration with a local nurse. Our service trip in July 2011 aimed to refine this program with the help of volunteers, ensuring it met the needs of the young patients.

To further empower the community, we enlisted a pro bono international landscape architect who designed five bandas (traditional structures) for the Matangini tribe, which were to be built alongside the planned vocational school.

The collaborative spirit of the Mtito Andei community played a crucial role in shaping these initiatives. Their vision for a sustainable and positive future for their children guided our efforts, and Global Roots was proud to support them in bringing this vision to life.

Clothing and Children's Garden Initiative

Baharak, Afghanistan

In 2011, Global Roots launched a children's garden in Badakhshan, Afghanistan, near the Light of Pamir children's home. This initiative provided a safe space for local children to play and learn about nutrition while also supporting the orphanage's sustainability by producing food for onsite use.

Working closely with our local partner, Janagha Jaheed, we secured land for the garden within walking distance of the home. To ensure its security, we planned to install a video camera, managed by a security guard who would also serve as the garden's caretaker.

Another milestone was the successful shipment of children's clothing and books to Kabul, made possible through the Denton Program. The humanitarian aid, collected by Valley Catholic students who were inspired by the needs in Northern Afghanistan, was scheduled to be transported by the U.S. Air Force to Badakhshan in July 2011.

As part of our ongoing commitment, Global Roots continued fundraising efforts to provide essential support for the Light of Pamir children's home, ensuring its long-term sustainability and the well-being of the children it serves.
